Fans of the young Belgian journalist and busybody Tintin will be a bit surprised … our hero has never been to Dublin, has he? Quick stroll into the archives. Nope … no “Tintin in Dublin” found.
And yet … there is this cover art … somehow different … I have seen it somewhere.
Yes, you may well have – when strolling past the Four Courts. As Dublin street art. Unfortunately slightly defaced by now, but still brilliant:
What we have here is not the plucky goodie-two-shoes of comic strip fame, but a pastiche that drags him kicking and screaming (especially after a good night out) into 21st century Dublin. Track suit, oversized trainers, baseball cap, fag in mouth, Argos-type gold rings on fingers, can of cheap lager or cider in hand, looking like he is going to beat someone up in a second. Even that dog looks mean.
Setting the scene are the GPO and the Spire.
What a great comment on modern Dublin. And what a clever idea to have this near the Four Courts, opposite a Garda station, that much easier to compare art with reality.
